Next week, to mark the centenary of his birth, Daniel Jones' music will feature in three episodes of Afternoon on 3 -

Monday 15th October

Cello Concerto

Paul Watkins/ BBC NOW/ Andrew Gourlay

Wednesday 17th October

Symphony No.12

BBC NOW/ Grant Llewellyn

Friday 19th October

I will record all of these for the archive.

It would have also been nice to think that one of our record companies would similarly have recognised the centenary of one of the finest modern British symphonists :( :(

A box-set of Bryden Thomson's 1-12 broadcasts with the BBC Welsh SO would have done very nicely, thankyou ...

 ::)

and they might as well pop Hickox's No.13 in as well ...

 :D

Symphony No.1 - br. 12th January 1990 *
Symphony No.2 - br. 19th January 1990 *
Symphony No.3 - br. 6th February 1991 *
Symphony No.4 - br. February 1992
Symphony No.5 - br. 9th February 1990
Symphony No.6 - br. 6th January 1991
Symphony No.7 - br. 23rd February 1990
Symphony No.8 - br. February 1993
Symphony No.9 - br. September 1993
Symphony No.10 - br. 6th January 1993
Symphony No.11 - br. 3rd February 1993
Symphony No.12 - br. March 1993 *
Symphony No.13 - br. 7th December 1992 *

... still, at least those marked * are in the archive.

I cannot understand the BBC at all ::) ::)

The Corporation moans about financial pressures yet it holds in its vaults recordings which are, obviously, copyrighted to the BBC and could be issued on cd at minimal cost ???

With the recent revelations regarding a certain light-entertainment personality, and the prospect of (surprise, surprise) compensation law suits (presumably to be funded by the licence payer), you'd be forgiven for thinking that the BBC would now be exploring every possible avenue of revenue-raising ...

Neither can I. But then Radio 3 does seem to be staffed by musical lightweights nowadays. Most of them would never have heard of Daniel Jones.

Ooh,so would I! :) :) One of the most engrossing symphonic cycles I have ever heard! And Bryden Thomson, one of my favourite conductors. Sadly missed & underrated. Shame on Chandos for not reissuing his Bax cycle (my first choice, not Handley!). Still, you can buy them on Amazon s/h at (usually!) very reasonable prices.....end of THAT rant!! ;D
Thank you for recording those broadcasts,Albion. What would we music lovers do without you. Well,I'd be cranking up ye olde dolby cassette deck in my case! ;D (Which reminds me,when I going to put up that fm stereo aerial that's standing in the corner?! :o :()
Incidentally,I wonder how long it will be before someone 'out there' with tapes of those missing Bryden Thomson symphonies Daniel Jones chances on this site?!!! ::)

And no,I can't understand the BBC either,Dundonnell!! Does anybody?!! ::)
(And maybe I DON'T want to!! >:( )
