Alexander Mackenzie was born in Edinburgh in 1847. He left us no symphonies. His sole string quartet, in G major, a very early work, appeared in 1868. He was knighted in 1895.

The Rhapsody écossaise, opus 21 (also known as the Scottish Rhapsody number 1 - there were three altogether), appeared in 1879.
