Joonas Kokkonen was born in Iisalmi in 1921.
He sought to implement a focal idea of building a whole work out of a limited number of embryo cells: the entire motivic material being presented in the very first bars with everything thereafter based upon it. Herein lies the cornerstone of his organic symphonic thought.
He gave us four grand symphonies and three string quartets:

- First string quartet (1959). There are three movements, given in three separate files.
It was performed by the Jean Sibelius quartet:

- Second string quartet (1966). There are four movements, given in four separate files.
I. Passacaglia: Allegro II. Intermezzo: Allegro comodo III. Introduzione ed Allegro vivace: Andante - Allegro vivace IV. Epilogo: Molto adagio
It was performed by the Melos quartet:

- Third string quartet (1976). There are three movements, given in three separate files.
I. Allegretto II. Allegro III. Adagio
