A few weeks ago I was about to share some music by Nikolai Rakov. Then, however, the discussions regarding the future of the Unsung Composers forum started, and as a result, I postponed the uploads. Now, I think the time to share the music has finally come. So here you are:

Vasilenko belonged to the oldest generation of Soviet composers, he could be compared to Glière. His output is large but few of his works have been recorded. I would really be interested in hearing other symphonies than his Third but there is probably no chance. Altogether, that's colourful music which is still much rooted in romanticism, nicely worked out and often with folk music influences.

Brusilovsky spent a large part of his life in Kazakhstan where he played a major role in educating young composers. His "Lonely Birch" Symphonic Poem, also known as "Zhalgyz Nain" (or "Zhalgyz Kain"), for which "Lonely Birch" just seems to be the translation, is an early example of incorporating Kazakh Folk Music. This is a colourful piece full of autumnal beauty.

These two symphonies belonged to the first rare Soviet symphonies I got to know, and I still think this is very fine music, no wonder it aroused my interest to go further. The Fourth is a very well-organized piece which makes much out of the motto theme which is heard at the beginning, a gloomy work with a grotesque middle movement. The Seventh is a piece for Russian folk orchestra, full of wit and with a certain laconic manner which is typical of Peiko.

Dagestani composer. Unlike its title might suggest, this symphony is quite a dark piece. It does depict nature and its relationship to man, but already the first movement is called "Drama", and the symphony ends with a plaint.

One of my favourite Soviet symphonies. For me, there is something very special in the long, plaintive lines of this piece - maybe a note of the hot and dry Turkmen desert wind about which Nurymow even composed a ballet.

Nikolai Kryukov (1908-1961)
In 1950, Kryukov wrote a new soundtrack for the 1925 Eisenstein classic movie "Battleship Potemkin".  The original score was written by Edmund Meisel (1894-1930, from Austria).  Kryukov wrote a lot of music to other Soviet films - if you speak Russian you can see a list here - http://www.kino-teatr.ru/kino/composer/sov/21428/works/

His music to Battleship Potemkin is very stirring and almost in the form of a 4-part symphony, I have uploaded it here:

The quality is so-so - I recorded it more than 10 years ago by connecting my cassette player to my VHS player!  So if anyone has a better version, please let me know!
